Team Captain Overview

Team Captains are motivators, leaders, and ambassadors for the entire St Croix Valley Youth

MTB team. Team Captains play a critical role in building team spirit, growing the team and

providing key communication between the riders and coaches. All sophomores, juniors and

seniors who have been on the team for at least one year are eligible to become a captain. There will be opportunities to help prior to the start of the

season.

Eligible candidates will complete an application including a one-page essay answering

questions from the Coaching Team. Captains will be selected by the Coaching Team and the

Team Board Members.

Attributes

These qualities are the determining factors for riders considered for a team captain position.

Being a great team captain is not about how fast they are, but their passion for the team.

Captains set the example with their excitement and positive attitude for practice, races, and

events. A great team captain is excited to see any of their teammates achieve their goals, no

matter how big or small. A team captain is a cheerleader for everyone on the team.

Team captains are expected to act as mentors and lead by example at all times. Leading by

example includes a positive attitude, respect of coaches and riders, and adhering to MCA

league and team rules.

Team captains will be ambassadors for the team and the sport. They will ensure inclusion of

riders despite their level, goals, school or diversity.

Responsibilities

1. Lead warm ups at the beginning of each practice

2. Attend 1-2 board meetings per year

3. Plan team building activities outside of practice such as (but not limited to)...

• Fun rides, bonfires, movie nights, barbecues/picnics, trail work sessions, etc.
• Parental supervision is mandatory, but the captains schedule and run the events, and can request team budget funding as needed.  
• Team captains can plan activities as a group or solo.
• Activities can be planned for the entire team or a smaller sub group (as long as equal opportunities for activities are considered for the entire team)

4. Help lead one practice per month (DirtKidz, MS or HS). This will include helping with

skills and games.

5. Help support riders that have missed skills. This may be a type of skills review practice.

This will be based on a need and will be discussed in advance.

6. Help hand out goal ties for MS at the end of practice.

• All sophomores, juniors and seniors who have been on the team for at least two years
• Complete application and turn into coach by deadline

Steps to become a captain

1. The candidate must fill out the designated application form, including student and parent

signatures.

2. The Coaching Team and Team Board members will select the team captains based on

the following factors:

• Demonstrated leadership during the season
• Passion for building positive team culture
• Responses to application questions
